Obituary

William (Bill) “Skeeter” Driadon, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 27, while surrounded by his family. He was 71 years old. Born in Philadelphia, on February 17, 1949, to the late Stanley and Isabel Driadon, Bill was a long time Ridley Township resident.

Bill was a 1967 graduate of Cardinal O’Hara who went on to earn an Associate’s Degree from Pennsylvania Military College, now known as Widener University. Bill then enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served as a Signalman from 1969-1972. He was a proud Veteran of the Vietnam War who often talked about his time overseas.

After his service in the Navy, Bill pursued a new mission which was to be a Police Officer. He was hired by the Ridley Township Police Department in January, 1975 where he remained an officer for over 20 years. During that time, he was awarded Delaware County’s Policeman of the Year in 1984 and also went on to graduate from the FBI Academy in 1985. He later retired from the RTPD as a Sergeant in February 1997. Throughout his time spent protecting and serving Ridley Township, Bill made many friends both on and off the force. He always took so much pride in being a member of the RTPD and in knowing that he was helping keep his community safe. Bill was also an active member of his local FOP and VFW organizations. After his retirement, he served as a Ridley Township Committee Man and was also employed by the Ridley School District as their Residence Investigator, where he worked for ten years.

Bill spent many years as a dedicated and respected youth sports coach within the Ridley community. He volunteered his time on the basketball court, football and baseball fields and his coaching resume included time spent with Notre Dame de Lourdes CYO, Interboro and Ridley School District, and Swarthmorewood AA. During his long coaching tenure, his most treasured time was spent coaching baseball down Blackrock Park where he would spend countless hours maintaining fields and making upgrades just so “the kids could play some ball.” In 2009, Bill was the head coach of Ridley Babe Ruth baseball team who went on to win the Pennsylvania Babe Ruth State Championship. He was committed to his role as a coach and to teaching his athletes the principles of sportsmanship, leadership, hard work, and respect. In 2016, Bill was inducted into Swarthmorewood AA’s Hall of Fame. In 2017, he was honored as the Outstanding Sportsman of the Year by Ridley Old Timers Association.

Bill was an avid golfer who enjoyed his annual golf trips to Myrtle Beach. He appreciated his time spent with his buddies at the Woodlyn VFW, now known as the Woodlyn Athletic Club. He was a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan and loved watching the Phillies on the porch with his wife. He cherished his summers spent down the shore in North Wildwood. But, Bill’s greatest joy was spending time with his family and he spent the last 12 years totally devoted to his role as a Pop-Pop.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Eileen, Daughter Jen (Jim) Gavin of Ridley Township, Sons Dan (Colleen) Driadon of Havertown and Matt (Chrissy) Driadon of Plymouth Meeting, eight Grandchildren (Camryn, Quinn, Brayden, Dillon, Clare, Nathan, Maggie & Molly), Brother, Michael (Lynn) Driadon of Ridley Park, Sister, Betteanne DiDaniels of Ridley Township. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all those who knew him.

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Bill’s life on Friday, October 9, at Blackrock Park, in Swarthmorewood, PA. Visitation will be 1:00-3:00 and a service will follow at 3:00. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing. Dress is casual.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Bill’s name to the Swarthmorewood Athletic Association. P.O. Box 23 Swarthmore, PA 19081.

We have been blessed to have Bill in our community. It was a privilege to know him, as I am sure most of us from the Wood will agree. Like most of my neighbors, my children benefited from Swathmorewood A. A. It wouldn't have been the same without him. Our prayers go out to Eileen and the family. Thank you for sharing this wonderful man with us. RIP Skeeter!
