Obituary

Sister Annie Frances Oman, OSF (formerly Sister Margaret Patricia), 92, died in Assisi House on February 29. She had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 71 years. Sister Annie Frances was born in Drumcondra, County Dublin, Ireland, where she was a member of Our Lady of Dolours Parish. She entered the congregation in 1946 and professed her first vows in 1949. Two of her sisters, Sister Patricia Joseph Oman (now deceased) and Sister Margaret Oman, also entered the congregation. Sister Annie Frances earned a BA in Education/French from Fort Wright College. She ministered primarily in elementary education and pastoral care.

Prior to moving to the west coast Sister Annie Frances ministered in education in the Archdiocese of Baltimore where she taught at St. Anthony School and St. Vincent School and in the Diocese of Wilmington where she taught at St. Mary School.

Sister Annie Frances ministered for 25 years in the Archdiocese of Seattle. She taught at St. Leo School and St. Charles School, both in Tacoma. Her work in pastoral ministry took her to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup and to St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma. During her last 12 years in the archdiocese, she volunteered at the Institute for Christian Ministries in Tacoma.

Sister Annie Frances also ministered in various dioceses in California. In the Diocese of Fresno, she served as both teacher and principal at St. John’s School in Wasco. In the Diocese of Oakland, she was a chaplain at Providence Hospital. In the Diocese of San Francisco, she worked in pastoral care at Seton Medical Center in Daly City. Her work in the Diocese of San Diego included teaching at The Madeleine School. In the Diocese of San Bernardino, she taught at St. Thomas School in Riverside.

Sister Annie Frances’ ministry in Oregon included teaching at Sacred Heart Academy in Klamath Falls, located in the Diocese of Baker.

Sister Annie Frances returned to the east coast in 2008 where she lived and engaged in local house ministry at Our Lady of Angels Convent, the congregation’s motherhouse. She moved to Assisi House, our retirement residence, in 2016 where she served in prayer and hospitality ministry until her death.

All services will be held in Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Road, Aston, Pennsylvania, 19014 on Monday, March 9. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 9:30 A.M. followed by viewing. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 A.M. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Aston. In addition to Sister Margaret Oman, Sister Annie Frances is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Joan Oman; her sister, Sister Agnes Oman; her cousins, Sisters Patricia Kidd and Maria Assunta Oman; nieces, nephews, and by her Franciscan family. Donations in her name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, PA 19014.
