Dolores J Inverso of Swarthmore, PA, passed away peacefully at her home Saturday July 18, 2020, at the age of 90.
Dolores was born in South Philadelphia to Antonio and Carmela (Campanila) Venturo, who both immigrated from Foggia, Italy. She was the youngest of 13 children. As a young girl, she played volleyball, softball, and basketball, but volleyball was her favorite. She graduated from South Philadelphia High School, class of 1948. After graduation, she worked for a Philadelphia Stock Brokerage firm. In 1951, she married the love of her life, Anthony Inverso.

Dolores lived in Swarthmore for the past 65 years and was a member of Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish. She was a devoted wife to her husband. She was a loving mom and a fun-loving mom-mom, who adored her grandsons. She was an amazing, creative cook and homemaker, and famous for her Iced Tea. She was naturally funny and always kept everyone laughing. She enjoyed music, dancing, her iPad, Alexa, fashion, spending time with her family, keeping everyone well informed of the latest news and medical advances, and celebrating other’s lives and accomplishments. She had a kind, loving, gentle spirit and embraced everyone who crossed her path, making them feel special. Her strong faith and patience coupled with her unselfish love was a precious gift to all of us.

She was preceded in death by her husband Anthony, her parents, her brothers Dr. Ralph Venturo, Charlie Ventura, Benjamin Ventura, Anthony Venturo, Ernest Ventura and Peter Venturo, and her sisters Rose Terlingo, Eleanore Ierardi, Victoria Papa, Florence Bolona, Angelina Venturo and Carmela Rossi.

Dolores is survived by her daughters Janet Inverso, Valerie Inverso and Barbara (Peter) Meredith, grandsons Jacob and Benjamin Meredith, and sisters-in-law Gloria Melloni and Bonnie Ventura and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation is Friday July 24th 9:30-10:30am at St John Chrysostom Church, 617 S. Providence Rd, Wallingford, PA, followed by her funeral mass at 10:30am. There will be a brief eulogy at 10am during the visitation. Interment will be at Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield.

Good morning, my name is Valerie middle daughter of Dolores and Anthony. I first want to thank St. Johns for allowing us to have mom’s service at your beautiful church. And on behalf of our family I want to thank all of you for coming today especially during this unrelenting pandemic. My remarks this morning will be brief. Mom said I should have been a writer so to prove her wrong I put together some anecdotes entitled“ Oh Dolores” which I hope you will enjoy over a cup of coffee or a glass of iced tea. Dolores in Spanish means sorrow and pain. What a way to start your life. She endured more pain than anyone I have ever met. Sometimes it was all consuming. The physical pain was chronic and affected multiple parts of her body. It was as if pain hunted her. Five of us went to Las Vegas and she contracted Shingles. The emotional anguish was overwhelming. And so, she did not make it to every holiday, birthday, anniversary, graduation, wedding, or funeral. But I will let you in on a little secret. She was with you in spirit. She thought of you often and she always prayed for you. She really tried to be there for you. When she was there, she was like the energizer bunny who couldn’t stop talking and laughing and who continued talking as you walked out the door. Mom was Pure joy personified. Childlike and genuine in her desire to be happy, have fun, be creative - and most of all to laugh. Dad was witty. She was a natural. Arguably the funniest person in the family. And Oh, did we laugh – it was infectious. Sometimes the occasion did not lend itself to humor – but more often than not, and usually not on purpose, she would say or do something that would break the tension, reminding us that sadness is temporary but happy memories will last forever. The adult Dolores, Dee Dee, mom, mom-mom can be summarized as follows: she had the wit and wisdom of Erma Bombeck, the common sense knowhow of hints from Heloise, the compassionate and caring expertise of Dear Abby, and the creative cooking and decorating talent of Martha Stewart all rolled into one. Another reason why she talked so much – She always had a solution. She was a sensitive, and caring person and was always aware of others. It was the simple gestures she did that I remember most. Like on hot summer days she would give ice water to the sanitation workers – before water bottles became the norm. and making sure to give Christmas gifts to the milkman and the mailman. Were there weaknesses, yes. She was late for everything. Even for those events that occurred on the same day every year. But she arrived impeccably dressed, you know the handbag matched the shoes and no wearing white after Labor Day, the makeup was flawless. And she turned heads when she walked into the room. And those heads had big smiles on them. As my uncle Gene often said, she always looked fabulous. When a friend of mine lost a parent at a young age, I asked mom why God would let that happen. Her response was that God would never give you a burden that he knew you couldn’t handle. And I remember thinking – wow you guys are going to live a long life. And they did. And yes, my sisters and I have our own lives independent of mom – or so I thought. A week ago, Thursday Barbara brought up a frozen cheesecake from the basement freezer. She walked into the living room with it and said “do you think we should leave it out to thaw or thaw it in the refrigerator. I said let it sit out for a few hours, Janet said thaw it in the refrigerator. Barb shook her head and rolled her eyes and got close to mom who was lying in the hospital bed and said very loudly mom, do we let the cheesecake thaw outside or in the refrigerator. She didn’t answer. I guess she thinks we are ready. How ironic it is that what took her from us was her heart. We all knew her heart. It enveloped every one of us. It was the best part of her. Always beating strong and rooting for you as you traversed your latest endeavors. So, dad, Phil and Lenny de Stefano have been waiting in Heaven for mom who as usual was the last to arrive. And I imagine they are at the Heavenly casino. Mom is playing a slot machine. And she has the familiar puzzled look on her face because this time, every time she pulls the lever she wins. And, hey if you happen to be in a casino – toss a roulette chip on number 29 for her. And then you can walk away cause it hardly ever comes up. On Friday, July 17th the hospice nurse and chaplain came by Janet, Barb and I were there too. The chaplain said, it looks like a party here and mom quipped, yeah, a going away party. She was ready. She told us to tell you stay healthy and be happy. Thank you.
