Obituary for Barbara Beck (Brown)

Barbara B. Beck (nee Brown) 88 of Secane, PA, died Monday January 25, 2021 in her home surrounded by her family.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Edwin Fletcher and the late Ruth (nee Eberly) Brown. A graduate of Germantown High School, she attended West Chester State College where she received a Teaching degree.

She was a retired teacher, employed by Ridley School District. Barbara taught at Leedom and Eddystone Elementary schools and coached Field Hockey and Lacrosse at the Middle School. Early in her career, she was a teacher and Field Hockey coach at Beverly Hills Junior High School.

She was an original member of the Ridley Twp. Swim Club and spent over 10 years as the Swim Team Representative. She volunteered for 40 years as the DELCO Swim League treasurer and was honored for her service in 2018. Barbara loved to watch swimming and diving competitions for her children and then her grandchildren. Every summer weekday, you would find her at the swim club. She will be missed by all.

Barbara loved the beach and, on the weekends, (after the swim meets) she would travel to her house in Ocean Gate, NJ. Her home in Ocean Gate was the location of many great memories for friends and family. In addition, Barbara was a season ticket holder to Media Theatre and Walnut Street Theatre and enjoyed attending shows with her family.

Every summer, she and her siblings would take turns hosting a family reunion. The highlight of her children and grandchildren’s summer were reunions in National Parks such as Yosemite, Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain National Park, Smokey Mountains, Cuyahoga, Arches and Canyonlands. Many great memories were made on these visits and travels to and from these locations included side trips to Lake Tahoe, Death Valley, Grand Tetons, Royal Gorge, Georgetown Loop, Pike’s Peak, and an RV trip to Minnesota.

She was the best mother a child could ever have. She touched many lives and was a second mother to some. Her home was the center of all the holidays for her family, extended family, and friends. Her New Year’s Day tradition of good luck pork and homemade applesauce was a tradition passed down through the generations.

Her quiet encouragement was an inspiration to her children and grandchildren. Her source of pride was her grandchildren’s accomplishments in academics, swimming, music, and track and field. She was their best cheerleader and the first person called to share the news.

Wife of the late Theodore (Ted) F. Beck II.

She is survived by her children, Theodore F. (Kathleen) Beck III, Timothy (Christina) Beck, Cynthia (David) Waters and Thomas Beck, sister, Priscilla Van Grevenhof, brother, Fletcher Brown, and her grandchildren, Madison Beck, Quinton Beck, Mason Beck, Nicholas Waters and David Waters.
